Marathon 15-hour golf event raises £5k for good cause

Larne golfers Glenn Baxter and Nick McClay, along with Alan Gibb and Stephen McNiece from Carrick, played 72 holes straight at Whitehead Golf Club in a bid to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer.

Glenn, who spearheaded the initiative, said the cause was one that is close to his heart.

“My father passed away last year after a short battle with cancer, and so I organised this in his memory,” Glenn added.

“We started at 5am and the first two rounds went very well, but as we teed it up ready for the third round at about 1pm, that is when the tiredness started to kick in.

“The third round was definitely the hardest but we said to each other that this is nothing compared to what other people are going through at this time so with that in mind, we forged on.

The foursome completed their epic challenge at 8.30pm – over 15 hours after it began.

Glenn added: “Before the event started we were looking ro raise around £2000 and we would have been pleased with that. We ended up raising £5000, which surpassed all our expectations.

“We cannot wait to do it all again next year and help raise more funds. We want to say a big thanks to Whitehead GC for letting us use their facilities, to all our sponsors, and to PGA Professional Colin Farr for his invaluable support.”
