Marc books his place at the FA Cup final

IT WAS agony and ecstasy this week for Aghagallon man Marc Wilson.

The Portsmouth defender helped guide his side to the FA Cup final with an impressive performance against a hapless Tottenham side on Sunday.

It was only a matter of hours after the south coast side's relegation from the English Premier League was confirmed that the team recorded the unlikely 2-0 victory over the London side in extra time.

Wilson was instrumental in back line for Pompey, commentators described his performance as 'immaculate'.

And many Portsmouth supporters bombarded message boards hailing Wilson's performance as his 'best in blue'.

Wilson believes the triumph can provide inspiration for another unlikely success, he said: "I don't think there was a lot between the teams.

"Tottenham are a great side with great players. I think we just nicked the goal at the right time and that was good for us.

"Chelsea are a great team. They are one of the best teams in England, if not the best. We don't care who we'll face. We are just delighted that we have made it this far.

"We have to carry on in the same way we have been going so far. It's been a fantastic run.

"Chelsea are a good side, but so are Spurs – and no-one gave us a chance of beating them."

Wilson said there were riotous scenes in the Pompey dressing room after the hard thought extra-time win:

"The lads are buzzing. It was a brilliant atmosphere in the dressing room afterwards. It was definitely a bit lively.

"I was really pleased for the lads and delighted to get the result.

"It's a huge achievement to get to the final."

The club, which has endured a torrid season, will now face league leaders Chelsea in the final on May 15 in front of 80,000 fans and a global audience of millions.

It is set to be an epic encounter between top and bottom of the league and Marc will almost certainly start if he is fit.

The club last won the FA Cup in 2007, however Marc was on loan at Bournemouth.

But it will be an uphill battle for the defender's side as they endured a 5-0 hammering at the hands of Chelsea last month in the league.

It has been a rollercoaster season for 22-year-old Wilson from Parknasilla Way.

Portsmouth have gone through four changes of ownership this season, wages have gone unpaid, staff axed and selections determined by financial restrictions.

And after going into administration the club were docked nine points by the Premier League.

However, for the former St Michael's lad this season has seen him rocket to stardom.

Last term he made a handful of appearances for the club, but this season he has secured his place in the first team and attracted interest from clubs.

In January Sunderland were rumoured to be considering a 4million bid for Wilson and reports have suggested he may make the switch this summer.
