Margaret graduates from Summer School

LISBURN woman Margaret McMahon was celebrating recently when she graduated from SERC Lisburn campus’ Summer School in arts & crafts.

Margaret received her certificate at a special presentation from Lady Sylvia Hermon, MP for North Down, the Patron of the Summer School for people with disabilities.

Over 50 people with disabilities aged 18-65 took part in this year’s Summer School, which has now been successfully up and running for 17 years. The programme of activities was jointly organised by The Cedar Foundation, Well 2 and South Eastern Regional College (SERC). Classes including cookery, arts & crafts, and light decorative metalwork were delivered across four campuses; Newtownards, Downpatrick, Bangor and Lisburn during July and the first week in August.

Speaking after this year’s graduation at SERC’s Lisburn campus, Lady Hermon said: “It’s always a real joy to present certificates of achievement to everyone taking part in the Summer School. The enthusiasm and talent amongst these particular students make for a very happy occasion, where their graduation is a source of great pride to them, their families and not least for their tutors.”

On receiving her certificate of achievement, Margaret said, “I loved taking part in the arts and crafts class. The tutor at the college Keri-Ann made the week for me, she was brilliant with everybody and so down to earth.”

Ken Webb, Principal and Chief Executive at SERC added, “It was a privilege to host this very special graduation ceremony and I would like to congratulate all of the students. The enthusiasm of all involved has ensured that students and staff enjoyed the sample courses on offer at SERC over the past three weeks. We look forward to welcoming some of the students to the College in September as they progress to further education.”
