Mark Somme '˜at local level', urges RBL

On July 1, a number of events will be taking place nationally to mark the 100 years since the beginning of World War One’s bloodiest battle.

Branches of the Royal British Legion will be hosting commemorations throughout the borough, while a Festival of Remembrance will take place in Carrickfergus on July 1.

The event will include a services’ display and World War One-themed exhibits next to Carrickfergus Castle.

Meanwhile, the RBL is encouraging people to mark the centenary at a local level.

The ambition is for villages and towns across the UK to gather at a meaningful place, such as a war memorial, local focal point, or in their home, to light a candle, read a poem, listen to music, or to share a photo of a family member who fought at the Somme.

To assist communities with local remembrance, the RBL has prepared a comprehensive First World War-themed toolkit, Remember the Battle of the Somme 1916-2016. The resource is available by download or through the post.
