Marking Holocaust Memorial Day

Next Monday is Holocaust Memorial Day and an event will be taking place in the town to mark the 69th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The event takes place on Thursday, January 30 in Icthus, the new cafe adjacent to High Street
Methodist Church.

Yanky Fachler, whose father’s family all perished in the Holocaust, will speak about ‘Kristallnacht’, the evening in November 1938 when thousands of Germany’s Jews were arrested, many murdered and thousands of synagogues
destroyed.

Yanky will relate the impact of the event on his family and his father, Eli’s, emotional return to Berlin to mark its seventy-fifth anniversary.

Linda Fullerton, author of the recently published book, ‘More Than a Suitcase of Memories’ will speak about the Matthews family.

Isaac Matthews came to Lurgan in the late 19th century to escape anti-semitic persecution in Russia and established a well-known drapery business. He became part of a small but one-time thriving Jewish community in the town.

The evening will begin at 7.30 pm. The event is free and everyone is welcome.
