Marshall gets top embalming honour

A FORMER Foyle and Londonderry College student has achieved a unique honour within his chosen profession.

Claudy born Marshall Lindsay has become the first man from west of the Bann to be elected President of the British Institute of Embalmers at their recent annual conference in Dublin.

Formed in 1927, the British Institute of Embalmers has had four previous presidents from Northern Ireland, but this is the first time the figure head has come from the western region.

Speaking to the Sentinel, Marshall said: “I was born in the Claudy area and my father, William John Lindsay owned a general store at Lisbunny.

“When I attended Foyle College it was at Lawrence Hill, I have happy memories of my years there and I am a member of my years there and I am member of the Old Boys Association.

“I became a partner in my father-in-law’s business in Kilrea in 1969 on returning from the Metropolitan Police in London.”

Marshall then managed the business, John A. Moore and Co for the next forty years. In 1979 he qualified as an embalmer and obtained his Diploma in Funeral Directing in 1981.

“I sold the business in 2006 to James McMullan & Sons from Ballymoney, but I still assist part-time when required. I have been Chairman of the Northern Ireland Division on two separate occasions, but it is a great honour to be recognized by my peers at home and across the water to be nominated and elected as National President. I am looking forward to my year in office,” said Marshall.
