Martha ‘a wee woman with a big personality’

Born in County Cavan, she moved to Belfast to live with an aunt and got employment in a Wool Shop there but after a short time she moved to Gilford and was Housekeeper to the Rev and Mrs. Cromie in the Manse.

She met her late husband David Moffett and they were married in Shercock Parish Church in July 1944 and moved to her present home.

Martha and David had a very solid, warm and caring marriage, and they loved each other dearly and deeply, and were committed to each other strongly and securely.

That strong love and those strong valies that Martha and David had in their lives and marriage, as the foundation which knit and built their young children and family together.

She had a deep interest in the farming community and after the passing of her late husband carried on the family farm. She loved her garden and the growing of pot plants. She was a member of All Saints Parish Church and at her funeral service in the Church her rector the Rev. Arthur Young paid the following tribute.

She is survived by two sons Roger and David, one daughter Mrs. Carol Maxwell, daughters-in-law Eileen and Daphne, grandchildren and great grandchildren. To these and all other relatives sincere sympathy has been extended.

Martha was the backkbone of the family -she was the head of the Moffett family. In the Minister’s tribute he said, “One thing can surely be said of Martha ad that is that she was honest, very fair, very conscientious and a hard working lady who was capable, reliable and trustworthy.

“Martha was also a lady who had a very infectious and warm personality and character - she was a very humorous person, her craic and laughter was so natural and spontaneous.”

The funeral, which was very largely attended, took place from her home on Sunday for service in All Saints Parish Church. The hymns ‘The 23rd Psalm’ and ‘What a Friend we have in Jesus’ were sung. Mrs. Jean Glass presided at the organ. The interment took place in the adjoining Churchyard. Family flowers were placed on the grave and donations in lieu of flowers are being sent to William Bell and Co. Funeral Directors, 23 Kenlis Street, Banbridge, BT32 3LR for Tullylish Parish Church Funds.
