Master Beekeeper visits Dromore meeting

DROMORE: The Spring Equinox was the perfect time of year for a Master Beekeeper from Dublin to visit Dromore to talk about some practical aspects of beekeeping.

Keith Pierce, a member of County Dublin Beekeepers’ Association, took as his subject ‘Making up Nuclei for Sale’ which dealt with the year round management of bee colonies, especially the Spring management necessary to permit colonies to build up sufficiently to enable nucs’ to be made up without prejudicing the honey crop.

It was Keith’s apiary that Dublin BKA took Dromore BKA on its Summer outing last year and it was as a result of the impression that Keith and his apiary made on that visit that he was invited to Dromore for the meeting.

In other Dromore BKA news, Vanessa Drew will be conducting an Intermediate Beekeeping course in Dromore this year; those holders of the Preliminary certificate and interested should e-mail Norman Walsh at [email protected]

The Summer outing will be a two day event on 16/17 June to Tipperary taking in the Galtee Bee Breeders’ Group annual queen rearing workshop, the Rock of Cashel and two prominent beekeepers. Those interested may book on a first come first served basis, by sending a cheque for £110, which includes transport and accommodation, to the treasurer, Gail Orr, 64 Ballycrune Rd., Hillsborough, BT26 6NH.
