Maths ‘not a problem’ for Donaghmore pupils

Pupils from St Patrick’s Primary School, Donaghmore have proved that when it comes to solving maths problems, they can do it with ease, after coming second in Northern Ireland in the Sumdog National Christmas Maths Challenge.

Sumdog is an online Maths challenge which is run throughout the UK and pupils from St Patrick’s Primary School, Donaghmore were placed in the Top 100 in the UK and narrowly missed out on the top spot in N.Ireland to Rathmore Grammar, Belfast.

The Christmas National Challenge involved 778 schools throughout the UK and 44,519 pupils.

The challenge was for pupils to answer 1000 Maths questions and the winners were determined by number of questions answered correctly and time taken to do so.

St Patrick’s PS, Donaghmore continually have children in the top 100 students in the Sumdog National Maths Challenges and

Year 4 pupil, Caitlín McCartan came 85th overall, beating pupils from both primary and secondary level.

Principal of St Patrick’s Primary School, Donaghmore, Mrs Dera Cahalane told the TIMES she is “extremely proud” of how well the children performed.

She said: “I am extremely proud of the very high and consistent achievements of the children in St Patrick’s P.S. Their successes are testament to the hard work of teachers, continuous support of parents and the children’s own dedication and willingness to achieve.”

Sumdog’s website provides free online educational games aimed at motivating students to practise maths and Reading - while teachers and parents can have full control over what they learn.
