Maxwell takes sixth at Portaferry

LARNE Athletic Club enjoyed a successful outing at the annual Portaferry 10-mile road race this week.

The local competitors were among the 300-strong field and leading the club home was Ryan Maxwell who had a fantastic run, finishing in sixth place with a new personal best of 57.15 - almost two minutes quicker than his previous time.

Craig Hutchinson produced an excellent performance and finished in 64.27, taking third in the V45 category. Heather Baxter also shaved almost two minutes off her time and finished third in the Female V40 category in a time of 81.49. The event also included a relay race with two runners tackling five miles each. Larne’s Rhonda Brady and Kirsty Sharatt both produced great performances to finish in first place in the female relay.

On Saturday four club members headed to the Kennedy Kane McArthur half marathon in Dervock. Conditions were very warm and windy but the local contingent coped well and were led home by Justin Maxwell who finished in fourth place in a time of 1:20.12. Phelim McAllister finished two places behind in a time of 1:21.56. Billy Thompson was the next finisher for the club coming second in the V40 age group in a time of 1:22.23. Bert Shaw completed the quartet with a great run finishing in 1:24.19.
