'Mayhem' at High Street

THERE was traffic 'mayhem' at Cushendall's High Street because the gates at the Cottage Wood site have to be closed on occasions because of anti-social behaviour.

Moyle Council Chairperson, Cllr Cara McShane (Sinn Fein), said she received a phone call from an irate person complaining about the main gates of the Council-owned property being closed which was causing “absolute mayhem” at High Street.

Cllr Randal McDonnell (Independent) said the main gates should be kept open with “no nonsense”.

Cllr Oliver McMullan (Sinn Fein) said the issue needs to be dealt with as a matter of urgency.

He said the gates were closed because of problems in the park but on a recent Sunday it led to a build-up of traffic outside.

He said there was a fatal road traffic collision in the area before and Roads Service were specific in saying there should be no on-street parking outside Cottage Wood at High Street.

Cllr McMullan said the pedestrian gate is still open.

He said a system whereby someone can close the main gates at night and open them in the morning should be put in place.

SDLP councillor Orla Black had tabled the issue of “security” at the Cottage Wood site for last week’s meeting of Moyle Council but was absent.

Recently however at the Council she spoke about the ‘blue bag brigade’ of open-air drinkers being out at Cottage Wood park.

She said there were a lot of people drinking in the area who left bottles and cans in their wake.

She said the issue of closing the gates at the facility would have to be re-examined.

And regarding the open-air drinking, Cllr Black recently said: “It is going to ruin our facility if we don’t do something about it.”
