Mayor attends Orange Historical Society lecture

THE SDLP Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Brian Heading has attended a lecture organised by the Lagan Valley Orange Historical Society.

Held in the Lisburn Orange Hall, the lecture was entitled ‘The Home Rule Crisis’ and it and the accompanying exhibition had received a Cultural and Identity Grant from Lisburn City Council. Mr Heading (pictured) said: “Having studied Modern Irish History as part of my degree I found this lecture very interesting. The decade that we have entered, 2012-2022, is one of significance for a number of major European/British/Irish events. This lecture by Dr David Hume focused on the Third Home Rule Bill, which proposed that in 1912 a Home Rule Parliament be established in Dublin.

“Just under half a million men and women from Ulster signed the ‘Ulster Covenant’ in protest to this proposed Bill. It was very interesting to hear how those who signed it believed that Home Rule would be disastrous to the whole of Ireland. Dr Hume had a copy of the Covenant which was gifted to him by a gentleman from Larne; and it was a remarkable document to view, as part of our recent history.

“I would like to commend the Lagan Valley Orange Historical Society for bringing its series of lectures to the residents of Lisburn, of which ‘The Home Rule Crisis’ was the final one,” he concluded.
