Mayor backing Blood Transfusion Service

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Billy Ashe is leading by example as he urges support for the work of the Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service.

In advance of upcoming local blood donor sessions in Ballymena on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 11 and 12, Cllr Ashe welcomed the Service’s Recruitment & Organisation Manager, Paul McElkerney to his Parlour and pledged to give blood himself by way of example.

Cllr Ashe said: “The Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service needs to attract many new donors to ensure a safe supply of blood to our hospitals. In Northern Ireland upwards of 1,300 units of blood are used by 500 patients each week, yet 94% of the eligible population still do not give blood.

“I am urging the people of the Borough to get involved and attend these sessions.”.

Cllr Ashe will be donating blood at one of the sessions next week being held on Tuesday and Wednesday in St Patrick’s Church Hall, Trostan Avenue.
