Mayor backs Transgender Day of Remembrance at Londonderry Peace Flame

The Mayor Brenda Stevenson will be in attendance at the Peace Garden on Foyle Street at 2pm on Thursday (November 20) for the third annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

She said: “I am happy to support the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and especially the Trans community which is a minority in our city and is often overlooked.”

Affirm NI and Trans* Londonderry, who have organised the event, say it will be an act of remembrance for those transgender people who have lost their lives through bullying, intolerance, murder and suicide.

The support groups say 200 transgender people have been killed worldwide this year and over 2000 have been killed worldwide since Transgender Day of Remembrance’s inception in 2008.

A celebratory message will be unveiled at the event and a minute’s silence held with the symbolic lighting of candles along with the presentation of Trans* Londonderry’s annual Sean Morrin Award for outstanding work carried out throughout the year for the LGBTI community.

The award was kindly provided by The Rainbow Project. Trans* Londonderry is an initiative of The Rainbow Project which was founded in 2012. The event is free for all to attend.

The message of hope will read: “For those who are Transgender or questioning who feel they are alone if you would like to talk to someone in privacy and in confidence, you can do so by contacting Trans Londonderry by telephoning 028 7128 3030 or alternatively by contacting Affirm NI by telephoning 075 4266 6345 and asking for Alexsia or Kerri Henderson or emailing [email protected]. You can also contacting us by visiting our website www.affirmni.co.uk and using their ask A.N.I. online chat service.”
