Mayor calls for safety measures at bridge

An accident, in which part of a bridge was demolished near Drumaheglis Orange Hall, has led to calls for safety measures to be put in place.

According to the Mayor of Ballymoney, Councillor John Finlay, this is not the first time the bridge has been damaged and he has responded to complaints from people in the vicinity by contacting the Roads Service.

Cllr. Finlay says that the problem may stem from the fact that the Glenstall Road is not gritted, and in recent icy conditions the risk of an accident is greater.

“I’m not saying this was the case with the latest accident, but it is a factor and we know that gritting is paramount to safety,” the Mayor told the Times.

The bridge is close to a bend, and on a general note, Cllr. Finlay is urging motorists to slow down when travelling from the Coleraine direction.

“Clearly there are a number of factors we could take into consideration, but I think that if Roads Service took a look at the situation they could perhaps come up with some safety measures.

“There appears to be about five or six feet of the bridge demolished, and this will take time and money to reconstruct.

“At present, there is a clear risk to other motorists – more so as there is a drop into a stream,” Cllr. Finlay said.

Cllr. Finlay has contacted the Roads Service and is awaiting a response.
