Mayor calls for urgent action on busy junction

Mayor of Limavady Gerry Mullan has warned that a busy junction in the town is so dangerous someone could be killed or injured.

The SDLP councillor is calling for urgent action to be taken to avoid an accident at the Greystone Road and Broad Road junction after being contacted by a number of constituents.Mr. Mullan said having attended a hard hitting road safety awareness exercise at St. Mary’s, Limavady recently, involving officers from the local NI Fire & Rescue Service, the PSNI and a funeral director, it brought home to him “the horror of being involved in such a real-life incident and has made me determined to do what I can to make our roads as safe as possible”.

Mayor Mullan said: “A number of people have contacted me about this, and it is all the more pertinent with the darker evenings and as the winter season approaches.

“Constituents have called on me, during my term as Mayor, to have a roundabout installed at the junction, which I believe would help traffic management at that particular junction. It would also help slow the traffic between there and the Broad Road and Rathmore Road junction, which has also been the scene of serious road accidents in the past.

“I share the concerns of those people who have contacted me in relation to the junction of Greystone Road and the Broad Road, as well as the junction of Rathmore Road and the Broad Road next to it. Both have been the scene of very serious road traffic accidents and, I too believe a roundabout is needed at the former in order to prevent any further serious injury, or worse, loss of life in this area. I have written to DRD Road Service to this effect and intend to raise it further at Council’s planning committee meeting on Tuesday so the most appropriate action can be taken in this regard.”
