Mayor condemns shooting of man in Dunmurry

LISBURN’S Mayor has condemned those responsible for the shooting of a man in the Glenbawn Link area of Dunmurry on Monday night.

Cllr Brian Heading said: “This was a savage attack which has alarmed a lot of people in the Dunmurry area.

“Brutal violence like this is totally futile and serves only to incite fear in our community.”

The shooting happened around 8.40pm and the man was hit in the ear. He was taken to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Police have arrested a man in connection with the incident.

Mr Heading said: “People around here don’t want shootings in their neighbourhood. We want a peaceful, prosperous community where children can grow and flourish and pensioners feel safe in their homes.

“The perpetrators of this attack ought to consider what they are contributing to this community and join the many people doing good work here to make Dunmurry a better place to live.”

Local councillor Stephen Magennis said children were playing in and around the area at the time of the shooting.

“Clearly there was no regard for their health or safety at all,” he said.

“As far as I am aware the shots were fired indiscriminately through the door, so they had no idea where those bullets could have ended up, and there were children playing very close to where the shooting happened so they could have been injured.”
