Mayor Eastwood pays tribute to former Mayor Kathleen McCloskey

MAYOR Councillor Colum Eastwood has paid tribute to former Mayor Cllr Kathleen McCloskey, who died today (Monday, January 24) following a long illness.

He said: "Kathleen McCloskey has been one of the city's most hardworking and well-respected councillors and news of her death will be met with great sadness across the city and beyond.

"Kathleen had a great personality, she was full of fun and loved nothing more than to meet and chat with people.

"She loved politics and working with the community and it was representing her constituents that she was most happy.

"During her years in politics with the SDLP, she worked tirelessly for the people of Derry taking particular interest in issues relating to housing, road safety and community relations.

"Kathleen was ill for some time and dealt with her illness in a brave and accepting manner, getting on with her life and spending time with the family she loved.

"On behalf of the members, management and staff at Derry City Council, I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to Kathleen's husband Eamon, her children, grandchildren and extended family, my thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time."

Kathleen McCloskey was an SDLP Councillor representing the Northland District Electoral Area of the Derry City Council since 1993.

In the past, she has served on many of the Council Committees and has chaired the Policy and Resources Committee, the Recreation and Leisure Committee and the Housing Liaison Committee.

She was elected Mayor of Derry on 10th June, 2002, and during this period served as an ex-officio member of the Council's Standing Committees – Planning, Recreation and Leisure, Environmental Services, City Marketing and Policy and Resources.

She also chaired the Derry Investment Initiative, the Visitor and Convention Bureau and Joint Chairperson of the City Partnership Board and was a member of The Honourable the Irish Society Advisory Committee
