Mayor marks Rev McMillan’s retirement

THE Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Brian Heading has hosted a reception in Lagan Valley Island to mark the retirement of the Rev William McMillan MBE, minister of First Presbyterian Church (Non-Subscribing), Dunmurry.

Members of his congregation joined the Mayor and elected members to celebrate Rev McMillan’s retirement at 80 years of age. He preached at Dunmurry Church for 42 years and served a total of 54 years in the Ministry.

Councillor Heading said was ‘an honour’ to be able to mark the retirement of Rev McMillan.

“Mr McMillan has travelled widely throughout his career, firstly as an ecclesiastical historian and lecturer, and in latter years, even more extensively throughout the world, in his ‘lay’ capacity as a floral artist and designer.

“He was awarded the MBE in 1999 for services to charity through his floral art and he intends to remain active in this field. On behalf of the Council I wish Mr McMillan every success and enjoyment in his retirement,” he concluded.

Mr McMillan is married and has one daughter and three sons. He was installed at Dunmurry in 1970 and retired on Christmas Day 2011. The minister in charge of the vacancy will be the Rev Lena Cockroft, minister of Cairncastle, Glenarm and Ballymoney Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Churches.
