Mayor: McShane’s actions were ‘disrespectful’

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens has described the actions of a fellow councillor as ‘disrespectful’ after an Irish tricolour and Palestine flag were displayed in the Council Chamber.

In a statement from Council, Mayor Knight McQuillan said:

“Last week councillor Padraig McShane sought permission to show an unnamed Palestinian visitor around the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough headquarters and the Council Chamber.

“Subsequently this unofficial visit was personally arranged by Councillor Padraig McShane and it took place on Friday the 19th of June 2015.

“No other local Councillors were invited.

“It is Council practice to encourage members of the public to view its facilities.

“This is in the spirit of promoting local democracy and creating more transparency in Council’s decision making.

“Having granted her permission to simply view the Council Chamber, the Mayor of the Causeway Coast and Glens feels that the subsequent actions taken by Councillor Padraig McShane were disrespectful of the Council Chamber.

“Councillor Knight-McQuillan went on to state that the goodwill of her offices and the Council had been misappropriated on this occasion. Undoubtedly this will force a review by Council of the protocols relating to this matter.”
