Mayor meets with Age Sector Platform over fuel payment cuts

THE Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Brian Heading has met with the ‘Age Sector Platform’ organisation to give his support to their campaign to have the proposed reduction in winter fuel payments rreversed.

After the meeting in the Mayor’s Parlour at Lagan Valley Island Mr Heading said: “The health and wellbeing of our elderly residents is of importance to me and my fellow Councillors.

“It is imperative that we offer support to Age Sector Platform as it works to secure a higher winter fuel payment for residents over the ages of 60 and 80.

“Last year saw the Province experience the coldest temperatures in over a century; and it is for this reason that the organisation is concerned with the removal of the winter fuel top-up amount which was received since 2008.”

The UK Government proposed in the 2011 Budget to reduce the winter fuel payment by £50 for people aged between 60 and 80 and by £100 for people aged over 80.
