Mayor offers his congratulations to councillor on MBE

Mayor Thomas Hogg has congratulated Councillor Fraser Agnew on being named in the New Year Honours List.

Councillor Agnew receives an MBE for services to local government and cross-border relations.

First elected to council in 1980, he was awarded the Freedom of the Borough in 2007.

Congratulating Councillor Agnew on his MBE, Alderman Hogg said: “Fraser is the longest serving councillor in the history of Newtownabbey. During his 33 years’ service he was elected to the office of Deputy Mayor in 1989-1990 and 2012-13, and to the office of Mayor in 1990-1991 and 2013-2014. The MBE is awarded for outstanding service to the community and on behalf of the council I should like to congratulate Fraser on obtaining this well-deserved and prestigious honour.”

Alderman Hogg also offered his congratulations to Mr Roy Graham, former Pastor at Belfast City Mission in Rathcoole, on receiving the British Empire Medal (BEM) for voluntary services to the community.

Other locals named in the New Year Honours List included Mrs Florence Mairs, Rev Ronnie McCracken, Mr Paddy Barnes, Miss Helen Lindsay (all MBE) and Mr John Hughes (BEM).
