Mayor raises awareness of spreading the warmth for winter

THE Mayor of Lisburn City Council, Alderman William Leathem, is encouraging senior citizens, their families and friends to prepare for the winter months ahead and to read the age NI Winter Wrapped Up booklet.

“It is important to take a few minutes to think about the approach of the winter weather and what it may mean for you or your elderly parent, family member or friend,” said the Mayor.

“I know it is easier said than done but I would encourage people who are preparing for the winter to get a copy of the age NI booklet, which is full of useful tips and advice.

Age NI has an advice service for a free Benefits Check.

There is also a helpline for the Winter Fuel Payment, 0845 9 15 15 15 and other information on sources of income.”

The Energy Saving Trust can advise on any financial help or grants a person may be entitled to for home insulation measures and its phone number is 0800 512 012.

The Mayor added: “It is important for older members of our community to ensure that they have the best knowledge available so that all avenues can be pursued as winter approaches.

“I would also appeal to younger members of our community to take the time to check in with an elderly relative or neighbour and see that they are keeping okay, as it can be really lonely if a senior citizen is living by themselves,” he concluded.
