Mayor saddened by death of rider Simon Andrews

“I express my heartfelt and deepest sympathies to Simon’s family and girlfriend following the passing of a superb rider and a great character.

“I know Simon was passionate about motorcycling and in particular the NW200.

“During the race week he relished any opportunity to meet the motorsport fans coming to the Coleraine Borough to enjoy this event.

“Simon was one of our chosen riders who gave his time to attend the ‘meet and greet opportunity’, created to enable fans to get ‘close and personal’ with the riders during the NW200 Race Week Festival.

“Last Friday, Coleraine town centre was filled with local school children, families and visitors, who waited eagerly to speak to their idols. Simon was a hugely popular this year, just like last year, he will be missed.

“At this difficult time I also wish to pay my respects to all the Emergency Services and the NW200 Volunteers who supported Simon, his family and friends during this extremely difficult time.”

Alliance councillor Barney Fitzpatrick has also sent his sympathies to the Andrews family.

In a statement he said: “I was deeply saddened to hear that Simon Andrews had died from the injuries he sustained in a crash at the North West 200.

“I would like to extend my condolences and sympathies to his family and friends.

“His tragic death has reminded us of the dangers that these motorcyclists face every time they take part in these races.

“I hope that the race organisers will look to see what further action can be taken to improve safety at the North West 200.”
