Mayor to join rescue team on the Foyle

LONDONDERRY Mayor Kevin Campbell will joins the local river rescue service on their nightly patrol of the Foyle on Friday (April 5).

He said he is participating in their nightly patrol to experience firsthand the work of the Foyle Search and Rescue volunteers.

The Mayor said: “Given the recent disturbing news reports surrounding the River Foyle I felt it was appropriate to join Foyle Search and Rescue for one of their nightly patrols to fully appreciate their dedication to the safety of our local community and valued contribution to the city’s emergency response and the conditions they work under.”

Foyle Search and Rescue, who are marking their 20th anniversary this year, has adopted the role of protecting human life in and around the River Foyle, one of the most dangerous and fastest flowing rivers in Europe, infamous for its high level of mortality.
