Mr Heading said: “It is an honour to welcome a member of the Dáil to both Lisburn City and Lagan Valley Island. This is a memorable occasion for me as Mayor to have Mr Hannigan visit the City and for him to hear about the great work that is taking place within Lisburn’s business and community sectors.

“Through its various programmes and initiatives the Council is committed to working with local businesses and community groups to help improve the local economy and voluntary sector including assisting where possible the development of companies and community groups.”

During the visit to Poleglass representatives from Footprints Women’s Centre explained how it works within the local community to provide training, skills and employment opportunities. It owns a trading company incorporating both a day care service and a catering business; and all profits from trading are ‘gifted’ back to this social enterprise.

Mr Hannigan said: “I enjoyed my short visit to Lisburn and I would like to return in the near future to see some of the cross-community initiatives that are currently taking place throughout the Lisburn area. I received a very warm welcome from both Council representatives and the ladies at the Footprints Women’s Centre. I would like to thank the Mayor of Lisburn for hosting my visit.”
