Six people were killed and eight others were injured when a bin lorry veered out of control and mounted the pavement in a packed city centre street on Monday afternoon (December 22).

At the start of Monday night’s full council meeting at Mossley Mill, elected representatives, staff and members of the public stood in silence with their heads bowed as the Mayor’s chaplain, Rev Campbell Dixon, prayed for those injured and those who lost loved ones in the “terrible tragedy”.

Police are still trying to establish what caused the accident at George Square, which was packed with Christmas shoppers at the time of the horrific incident.
