Mayor’s charity gets a big boost from Santa’s Grotto

FOLLOWING the success of the Santa’s Grotto at the Irish Linen Centre in the weeks before Christmas the Mayor, Councillor Brian Heading, has handed over a cheque for £1893.52 to his Mayoral Charity, Lisburn2gether Special Olympics.

Donations to the charity were made by visitors to the Grotto and the Mayor conveyed his thanks to members of the public who had helped raise the money.

Lisburn2gether was formed in 2003 and works with athletes with an intellectual disability to compete in their chosen sporting area locally, nationally and internationally.

“I would like to offer my thanks to one and all for the voluntary contributions made around the Christmas period” Mr Heading said. “The generosity of the people of Lisburn is well known and the charity is very pleased with the support given to it.”

Lorraine Foster from the Mayor’s Charity said she was delighted with the funds raised and commented: “I would like to thank all the staff from the Council who collected donations made.

“The Grotto took many days to set up and it was manned with cheerful helpful staff who no doubt made the visit to Santa for the little ones all the more enjoyable.

”We are really pleased with the increasing profile our charity has and it is such a privilege to see the people we work with achieve their goals, indeed the 2010 Special Olympics was a showcase for our athletes who brought a total of 12 medals home between them and we of course wish to continue to aim high and give all the support to our athletes that we can.”
