“Many have recognized his contribution to Northern Ireland life and his peace building work, particularly his stance against violence.

“The former Roman Catholic Cardinal was a native of rural north Antrim - the village of Loughgiel. He is deeply mourned by people throughout Northern Ireland, but I know he had a special place in the hearts of those in his native parish where he is very fondly remembered.

“As first citizen of this borough I sympathise with all who grieve his passing.”

Alderman Harry Connolly, who represents the Loughgiel area as an SDLP representative, thanked the Mayor on behalf of the parishioners.

He said: “I agree with the Mayor when he said that Cardinal Daly was a man who lived for peace. We are all very grateful that he lived long enough to see peace in Northern Ireland.”

The Mayor said he was also saddened to learn of the passing of Frank Lindsay, husband of Mrs Beth Lindsay who serves on the District Policing Partnership.

“I would convey to Beth and the family circle Council's deepest sympathy,” the Mayor said.
