Mayor's shoebox appeal for Eastern Europe

THE Mayor of Ballymoney has urged church and community groups as well as other organisations to throw their weight behind the annual shoebox appeal for underprivileged children in Eastern Europe.

Councillor Bill Kennedy was speaking to the Times after hosting a reception for those behind the shoebox appeal.

Last year 1230 boxes were sent and this year Cllr. Kennedy says he would love to seethat figure increased to 1500.

The boxes will go to Belarus and Ukraine and anyone who wants to donate can do so by leaving them at the Drop Inn Ministries in Castlecroft.

Cllr. Kennedy says he is full of admiration for the likes of Edwina Chambers and her volunteer helpers who take the time to store the boxes, organise transport and ensure that the items are with the children in time for Christmas.

“This is probably the only Christmas present they’ll get,” Cllr. Kennedy said, adding: “therefore it is all the more important that people respond.

“I would appeal to the people of Ballymoney and district who have been exceptionally generous in the past to show their generosity again and provide shoe boxes.

“I understand tney are going out on November 1 and will be there in time for Christmas. Church groups, community groups, football clubs and anyone who can help should show their gratitude to the people who volunteer by trying to help. It would be greatly appreciated by Edwina and her staff.”
