MBE for Maurice Mills

Alderman Maurice Mills cut his political teeth in the early 70s as a staunch supporter of the Rev. Ian Paisley.

A committed born-again Christian, Alderman Mills has courted controversy in his long career in local politics but was always known at a local level as a hard-working community representative with a keen appreciation of the need to keep in touch with the party’s grass roots.

Ever since the award of the MBE became public, Mills’ words in which he blamed Hurricance Katrina on a gay event hosted by the city of New Orleans have reverberated around the internet.

He refused to retract his words at the time, quoting his ‘Biblical faith’ and this remains his position in the wake of the current controversy.
