McAuley murder: Coleraine man released on bail

The 36-year-old man arrested in Coleraine on Thursday as part of the investigation into the murder of Paul McCauley in Londonderry in 2006 has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The other male (28), arrested in Londonderry remains in custody.

Mr McAuley (38) died last month in a care facility almost nine years after an attack in July 2006. He was attending a summer BBQ at the rear of a house in Chapel Road on 15 July 2006. At 3.20am on 16 July, only three people remained at the BBQ. A group of up to 15 people came from out of the bushes and attacked Paul and two of his friends. After the assault the group made off in the direction of Irish Street.

The officer leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey, said: “I want to thank those individuals who have come forward with information regarding the murder of Paul McCauley and attempted murder of his two friends.

“This is a very active investigation. I would like to make a further appeal for information from anyone who was at or near the scene of the brutal attack on Paul and his two friends which occurred at 105 Chapel Road in Londonderry. I am appealing in particular to those individuals who were in the Irish Street area of Londonderry on 16 July 2006 between 1am and 4.30am who may have crucial information regarding this investigation.

“Please come forward and tell us what you saw or heard or what you know. People can contact detectives at Maydown on the non-emergency 101 number or use the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if they prefer to provide information anonymously.”

One man has been charged with Paul McCauley’s murder.
