McCann: Britain to add trickle to downpour of bombs in Syria

Eamonn McCann says it seems that Britain is about to contribute its trickle to the downpour of bombs on targets in Syria.

He said: “There are two things we can say for certain – that innocent civilians will be killed by these bombs, unlike Islamic State, which will survive.

“The bombing won’t make cities in these islands or anywhere else safer. On the contrary, a thirst for revenge on the part of IS will make us more vulnerable.

“The real motive of Cameron, Obama, Hollande, Putin etc., is to make sure they don’t lose out in the scramble for the wealth of the region and prestige among major nations.

“If western leaders really wanted an end to the appalling violence in the Middle East, the very first thing they should do is stop pouring arms into the area. Stop fermenting war by arming the likes of Saudi Arabia and Israel.

“The west will have no credibility and no diplomatic solution will be possible until this is done.

“In time – and not very much of it – the case for war will be shown as phoney, the case for peace conclusive. But by then it will be too late for many thousands of innocent people.”
