McCleanbacks SF name change bid

Controversial Londonderry footballer James McClean has added his tuppence worth to the debate on whether or not the Derry City and Strabane District Council needs to petition the Queen in order to have the name of the city officially changed.

Unionists reacted with anger and disappointment to a Sinn Féin call for Derry City and Strabane District Council to write to DoE Minister Mark H Durkan, seeking clarification on changing the city’s name to Derry.

A previous Sinn Féin attempt under the old Derry City Council to ask the Queen to change the name was voted down by unionists and the SDLP in 2010.

The West Brom winger tweeted on Friday: “Training finished, gym finished, Derry’s officially getting its rightful name back, have a great day folks.”
