Last week Mr Robinson said it would be wrong to proceed with the Maze peace centre in the absence of a consensus about how it will operate.

Defending the First Minister, Alderman McClure said: “On a point of principle, the DUP have consistently and frequently stressed that we will not permit any shrine lauding republican terrorism to be erected at the Maze.

“I salute Peter Robinson for having the courage of his convictions to stand firm on this issue and believe he is taking the correct course of action when he says absolutely clearly that the rest of the Maze development can and should proceed without obstruction.

“The decision regarding the peace centre does not need to impact upon the massive economic potential of the site and the thousands of jobs which can flow as a result.

“The only people who appear to be casting any doubt on these jobs are Sinn Fein,” added Ald McClure.
