McClure salutes bravery of armed forces in Afghanistan

MEMBERS of the Armed Forces serving in Afghanistan were commended for their unstinting bravery at the Independent Demonstration in Armoy.

Alderman Bro. James McClure, said that on a day when Brethren celebrate the struggle to secure their civil and religious liberty, they should not forget those who are currently engaging the enemy on the field of battle.

He went on: “Down the years our soldiers have fought with bravery and honour to ensure freedom for us all. Now, in Afghanistan, there are daily feats of bravery, of facing fear and I salute not only the dedication and professionalism of our serving forces there but also their unswerving belief in what they are doing and achieving.

“We should never forget that these valiant men and women are in the field of conduct to ensure freedom from tyranny for the people of Afghanistan and a better world for us all.

“In this modern era we take our freedom for granted. We go about our daily routine without a thought for those who made it possible.

“That is why I urge you all to take a moment to reflect with pride and gratitude on the service and sacrifice by our troops in the theatre of war.

“Assembled as we are on the 320th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne, we also remember with thanksgiving the 65th anniversary of victories in Europe and Japan.

“We return thanks to Almighty God for His preservation and deliverance in times past and for those who have defended our civil and religious liberty.”
