McClure welcomes cold weather payments

DUP Alderman James McClure says the release of cold weather payments to low income families in the area will be a help in the difficult financial period after Christmas.

Alderman McClure said: “Although the payment is only 25, it will nevertheless be useful for households who are struggling to make ends meet.

“The payment is triggered where the temperature has been or is forecast to be 0C or below for seven days in a row.

The money will be paid automatically to about 166,000 qualifying households.

Alderman McClure added: “For many people these are difficult enough times after Christmas when finances are stretched to the limit. The cold weather allowance helps those in need pay heating bills.

People should be clear that this money is in addition to winter fuel payments which are made to people aged over 60.

Meanwhile, the local representative is calling on the elderly to remain careful during the cold snap: Many older people have been experiencing difficulty even getting outside their own homes let alone being able to venture further to buy groceries or other essentials.

“This is the time when falls are most likely and I would urge the elderly to stay indoors in the heat.

Relatives should be making a point of checking on their older loved ones who may be experiencing difficulty during this difficult time,” he said.
