McClure welcomes moves to tackle underage drinking

TOUGH new powers to tackle under age drinking in public places will help police in their battle to curb a worrying trend, DUP Alderman James McClure has said.

“The police are constantly having to deal with a growing problem of young people under the age of 18 drinking alcohol in the open air,” said Alderman McClure.

“It is a worrying situation that children as young as 12 and 13 are able to get their hands on alcohol in the Coleraine area.”

“This is a concern because youngsters drinking regularly at such a tender age are putting their health at risk.

“I welcome the announcement of these new powers. They will allow for the confiscation of alcohol, tougher penalties for persistent drinking in a public place and police returning teenagers under 16 to their home for suspected drinking in a public place are all part of the new laws that have been commenced.”

Alderman McClure added that he believed parents have a duty to know where their children are when they are out and what exactly they are doing.

“Too many young people seem to be free to roam the streets and fall into temptation when it comes to alcohol.

“I would urge parents to ensure they know their children are in a safe environment when they are away from home at such a young age.”

Alderman McClure added: “I also welcome the fact that new moves are being investigated to tackle the illegal sale of alcohol to minors which is another part of the problem.”
