McGlone pushes for bypass funding

SDLP MLA for Mid-Ulster Patsy McGlone has pressed the Minister for Regional Development Danny Kennedy over funding for bypasses in Cookstown and Magherafelt.

Mr McGlone said: “Cookstown and Magherafelt have been waiting for some-time for a bypass to improve accessibility. These towns can get extremely busy at certain points in the day and a proper transport network is essential.

“Much of the traffic is passing and not connected to the local economy. This often delays potential visitors to the towns who may well be looking to support businesses in the area.

“My colleagues have raised concerns about congestion at Council level. The Minister today assured me that he will bring forward a paper on the roads construction industry to the Executive.

“As the Chair of the All Party Group on Construction I would be very keen to see these bypasses being started which would also give a tremendous boost to the construction industry.

“The Minister must invest money wisely on projects that would help provide a boost not just to the construction industry but enhance the infrastructure and communications in areas such as Cookstown and Magherafelt.”
