McGuinness not getting involved in Scotland’s debate

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has no intention of contributing to the campaign to ‘smash the Union’ next week and insists it’s a matter of self-determination for the Scottish people.

The former IRA member acknowledged at Stormont on Monday (September 8) that we will have to deal with the implications whatever way the vote falls and that they could be “quite profound.”

However, he is resisting the temptation to get involved in the debate.

“We have not been involved in any discussions, because to do so would be to pre-empt the outcome of the decision of the people of Scotland,” he said.

“I personally have very consciously stayed out of the debate, because I think that what is happening in Scotland is a matter for the people of Scotland to decide, without outside interference.

“So, I have no intention whatsoever of contributing to a view that would in any way undermine the rights of people there to make their own decision,” he added.

Mr McGuinness said that once the vote is taken the Executive will then deal with the fallout.

“We will not be the only people dealing with the fallout.

“It is quite obvious that the British and Irish Governments are very focused on what is happening there and are conscious of their responsibilities in the aftermath of whatever decision is made,” he said.
