McIlroy calls for speedy progress in Bushmills

A COUNCILLOR wants to see speedy movement on developments which have been given planning permission in Bushmills.

Cllr Robert McIlroy (DUP), the Vice-Chairperson of Moyle Council, has welcomed a number of new schemes in the town but hopes they will proceed without delay.

He said: "It is good to see all these buildings in Bushmills being developed and I would encourage the applicants to move now and make good the planning approvals."

Council Chairperson, Cllr Cara McShane (Sinn Fein), added: "I think everyone would agree."

The comments came after two of the most significant people involved in seeking planning permission for schemes in Bushmills - Seymour Sweeney and Ron Faia - were given permission for new developments.

Mr Sweeney was given approval for a proposed redevelopment between 48 and 58 Main Street, Bushmills, with three replacement retail units - including a cafe/bistro and hot food takeaway - and five office units.

In another case, Bushmills DUP councillor Davy McAllister, is keen to ensure one of the most historic structures in the town is retained.

Cllr McAllister wants "the oldest wall in Bushmills" retained as part of plans for the proposed renovation, alteration and extension of an existing building into a B&B at 145 Main Street. The applicant is Mr Faia.

The councillor said the wall belonged to an old mill and he sought an assurance from planners that it will not be touched or knocked down.

Planners have given the green light for the scheme.

There were six objections including concerns about parking and noise of people using a terrace.

The Council agreed to accept the recommendation of planners to approve the plans on the condition that the wall will not be impacted upon.

Meanwhile, a new cultural centre is to be built on the former National School at Main Street, Bushmills.

Planners have given the go-ahead for the conservation and refurbishment of the existing building with the provision of a flat roof rear extension to provide exhibition space for the centre. The applicant is Mr Faia.
