McIlveen holds talks on traffic calming at Portglenone primary

DUP MLA David McIlveen has taken steps to enhance safety for pupils attending Portglenone Primary School in response to fears expressed to him by some parents .

Speaking after meeting last week with Police and Roads Service to discuss the traffic around the school, Mr McIlveen said: “Several parents had expressed their concerns that some traffic was travelling too fast and they felt that the situation could be dangerous. This is obviously a completely unacceptable situation when young children are travelling to school, therefore I arranged this meeting as a matter of priority.

“I am pleased to say that both the Police and the Roads Service recognised this problem and that they are now supporting a bid for more visible signage and traffic calming measures in the area.

“I plan to keep a close eye on the progress of this and hope that parents and guardians are reassured that I am doing everything I can to ensure both they and their children are safe in and around the school grounds.

“Every child has the right to be safe when they are travelling to and from school and I hope that the planned measures will ensure that this is the case,” he said.
