McKay welcomes plastic bag levy

Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has welcomed the announcement that a five pence levy on carrier bags is to introduced next year with it rising to 10 pence in 2014.

Mr McKay who had an Act on a Single Carrier Bag Levy passed by the Assembly last year said

“Evidence shows that wherever a levy of this type has been introduced it has been a great success, especially with members of the public,” he said.

“The fact of the matter is that carrier bags are a huge litter problem, they are unsightly and most members of the public recognise that consumer behaviour has to change in regard to carrier bags.

Administration of the levy has been an issue that generated significant debate when I consulted on my legislation last year and it is also to be welcome that up to ten jobs will be created to carry out this role.

“Sinn Féin first brought this proposal to the Executive in the last Assembly where it was adopted. We have also passed legislation for the levy. It is good to see that there is cross party support for this initiative that will be welcomed by members of the public and those who want to see their streets and countryside free of litter.”
