McKeen presses for allotments

LARNE Borough Council is to investigate the development of community allotments in various locations across the borough, to be managed by a social enterprise programme.

Cllr Gregg McKeen, who proposed the move, said the council could apply for funding recently made available by the Department of Finance and Personnel. He added that Carrickfergus council reckoned its investment in allotments was the best £20,000 it had ever spent, and pointed to a pilot scheme at the Town Park which had been well received.

Feedback from community surveys had shown a demand for allotments and the Millbrook community development association had included provision in its village renewal plan, said Cllr McKeen, who won unanimous approval of Council for the motion.
