McKillop receives plaudits after Rio success

Glengormley man Michael McKillop has been described as 'a credit to the borough' after he struck gold medal success in Rio.

The local athlete took to the top step of the podium after a stunning display at the Paralympic Games on Sunday.

He stormed home in the T37 1,500 metre race in a time of 4.12.11 to seal gold for Team Ireland.

This was his second successive Paralympic gold in the 1,500m, following on from his victory at the Games in London 2012.

Speaking following his triumph, Michael said: “This one is special because I’ve come through a really tough time and I’m just glad that I was able to go out and win because of the tough times. I had to stay focused and realise what life is about, it’s not just about winning gold medals, it’s about living and being proud to live the life you have, and I’m lucky.”

Congratulating Michael, Mayor, Cllr John Scott said: “Michael is a credit to the borough. All of his dedication and hard work has paid off.

“Everyone is really proud of him and he is an inspiration for all young athletes in the borough.

“The council will now be looking at ways to mark his fantastic achievement.”

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Noreen McClelland added: “Michael has worked hard to achieve this success. This is his fourth Paralympic gold and everyone in Glengormley is proud of him. He is a brilliant role model for the whole community.”

At the Community Planning and Regeneration Committee meeting, chair of the committee, Cllr Phillip Brett congratulated Michael on his latest sporting success.
