McPeake demands gritting of busy Bellaghy road

MAGHERAFELT Sinn Féin councillor Sean Mc Peake has called on Roads Service for the inclusion of Mullaghbuoy Road, Bellaghy in future Roads Service winter gritting schedules.

The request comes on the back of a number of particularly bad periods of inclement weather this past winter which resulted in a number of vehicles getting stuck in the hills on the Mullaghbuoy Road thereby blocking the roadway.

Commenting Councillor Mc Peake said: “The Mullaghbuoy Road Bellaghy is a particularly heavily trafficked route which has several hundred vehicles travelling on it daily.

“Although heavily utilised daily the road itself is narrow in parts with several steep hills and sharp corners, making it particularly dangerous in icy or snow covered conditions.

“There are a number of buses, HGV`s and agricultural vehicles also travelling on the route daily making it particularly

hazardous for travelling on. Many local residents have signed a petition in support of the inclusion of this road on future Roads Service gritting schedules.

“After discussions with DRD Roads Service, I and local MLA Ian Milne are delighted that Roads Service has agreed to conduct a traffic usage survey on the Mullaghbuoy Road which will assist in assessing the road for possible future inclusion. A further meeting has been arranged with Roads Service Regional Manager in Omagh to present the petitions of support and to assess the outcomes of the traffic survey.

“We are hopefully that a satisfactory outcome can be found and we are greatly appreciative of Roads Service`s co-operation in the matter”
