McShane concern over Lammas Fair parking tickets

MOYLE Sinn Féin councillor, Cara McShane, has slammed the issuing of parking tickets in areas of Ballycastle during the Lammas Fair and encouraged motorists who felt unfairly penalised to contact Roads Service Parking Enforcement section to appeal their Penalty Charge Notice.

Cllr Cara McShane said: “I have received many complaints from people who were issued with parking tickets over the two days of the Lammas Fair. I witnessed for myself areas within the town which were not clearly marked out as restricted parking areas.

“One area in which the majority of Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) were issued was on Strandview Road. There is a bend on this stretch of road and I witnessed for myself just two police cones at the top end of the road at the junction onto Rathlin Road. For visitors coming into Ballycastle however from North Street, entering onto Strandview Road, would not have known the road was restricted parking.

“I fully appreciate that there needs to be clear passage for emergency vehicles and access for residents, however many people visiting the oldest Fair in Ireland went home feeling angry and frustrated.

“The local PSNI in collaboration with Roads Service have a responsibility to ensure that roads which have restricted access are clearly identifiable. With thousands of people walking through the town of Ballycastle over the Lammas Fair, movable cones are surely not the solution. From talking to the local authorities in this instance, it seems evident that there was confusion between the firm contracted to put out the cones, the PSNI and the Roads Service.

“Anyone wishing to appeal their ticket should get in touch with the Parking Enforcement Processing Unit at County Hall in Coleraine as soon as possible,” said Cllr McShane.
