MEA Council considers Queen’s 90th birthday plans

On September 9, Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest-reigning monarch in British history, surpassing the record held by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.

During a July council meeting, Councillor Mark McKinty asked if an event could be considered to mark the occasion.

However, at a council meeting on August 3, Chief Executive Anne Donaghy told members that guidance from the palace and Lord Lieutenant of Antrim Joan Christie encouraged the public to engage with planning for the monarch’s 90th birthday in November 2016, after the palace said it did not intend to hold events to mark her reign.

DUP Councillor Gordon Lyons proposed that council accept the recommendation to write to the Queen acknowledging and thanking her for her service, with a celebration event to be planned to mark her 90th birthday. This was seconded by UUP Councillor Mark McKinty.

UKIP Councillor Noel Jordan asked whether there would be support from council for community groups who wished to celebrate.

“I have had an enquiry from Carrick and have told them they are welcome to apply through the normal grant scheme,” said Mrs Donaghy.

“I would be very keen this council would look at encouraging communities to celebrate her Majesty’s 90th birthday with street parties that we have done before for the Jubilee.
