The development comes as local representative Leanne Peacock continues to gather signatures for her road safety petition for the area outside the primary school.

North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay said: “The installation of school safety zone signing here will be a great improvement. I have discussed this with Roads Service on site before and I think the greater focus put on this issue by the parents’ petition has added weight to our argument.

“This work will include the provision of new larger school warning signs incorporating amber flashing lights. These lights will be activated when the children are going to and from school and additional road markings will be provided to complement the new signage. As ever our thanks go to Roads Service and Jackson Minford for responding to our concerns.”

Ballymoney Sinn Féin representative Leanne Peacock who has gathered signatures on a local petition believes more needs to be done and whilst thankful for this work will be meeting with roads service officials to discuss further measures: “There remains a need to address the issue of children in particular crossing the road here from the carpark to the school. I look forward to seeing how effective the new lighting system will be when the work is carried out in the next few weeks but the provision of a crossing and traffic island is still something I want to see considered.

“Sinn Féin have delivered on having this part of the Gortahar Road added to the gritting schedule and now on securing warning lighting and signage. However we will continue to campaign until we are satisfied that all the major road safety issues at this site are addressed.”
