Meath men in courtover Waterfoot bomb

Two men from County Meath have appeared in Londonderry Magistrates’ Court charged in connection with an attempted bomb attack on the Waterfoot Hotel in the city two months ago.

Darren Poleon, 41, from Kells in County Meath, and 34-year-old Brian Walsh, of no fixed abode, are both charged with placing an improvised explosive device at the Waterfoot Hotel on October 6 and with possession of explosives with intent to endanger life.

They refused to acknowledge the court.

Londonderry Magistrates’ Court heard that police obtained their travel routes from a satellite navigation system as evidence against them and also found balaclavas, walkie talkies and a replica gun when they searched their car at 11pm the same day in Omagh.

The satellite tracking indicates that Poleon’s car left Kells. Co.Meath at around 2.30pm on October 6.

Both men are allegedly caught on CCTV later that date buying a grey rucksack in an Aldi store in Co.Cavan.

An improvised explosive device was found at the hotel the day before a PSNI recruitment event.

District Judge Barney McElholm refused bail for fear of further offences. He said in his opinion there is a ‘strong circumstantial case made out against both accused’ and there is a ‘strong fear of further offences’. The judge added that ‘there is a strong public interest in preventing this sort of activity’.

They are back in court on December 31.
